Battle of The Somme
Started 100 years ago on Friday 1st July.

I'm guessing many of us lost family members.

The Battle of the Somme (French: Bataille de la Somme, German: Schlacht an der Somme), also known as the Somme Offensive, was a battle of the First World War fought by the armies of the British and French empires against the German Empire. It took place between 1 July and 18 November 1916 on both sides of upper reaches of the River Somme in France. It was the largest battle of the First World War on the Western Front; more than one million men were wounded or killed, making it one of the bloodiest battles in human history.

The price of war
It wasn’t worth it. No war is worth it. No war is worth the loss of a couple of lives let alone thousands. T’isn’t worth it … the First World War, if you boil it down, what was it? Nothing but a family row. That’s what caused it. The Second World War – Hitler wanted to govern Europe, nothing to it. I would have taken the Kaiser, his son, Hitler and the people on his side … and bloody shot them. Out the way and saved millions of lives. T’isn’t worth it.

Just discovered that many of the casualties (ours) could have been avoided if the intelligence from captured POWs had reached Haig.

The IWM is holding a special event from 8pm until midnight on 30 June called - believe it or not - The Night before the Somme.

Having seen what's on offer its not really my cup of tea but some of you might be interested.

60,000 British casualties on the FIRST day alone.... basically 1/5th of the population of Iceland... or Croydon

My daughter and her school just came back from a day trip to the WW1 battlefields and the menin gate... few of the kids were really moved by what they saw and the ceremony...

Never forget...

What happened on that day is, to be honest, beyond all our imaginations.

Worth mentioning that there was a brilliant documentary a few days' ago on Channel 4 with videos sent from the Forgotten Army in Burma during WW2. One of them was able to see himself 70 years later. Remarkable.

All our kids should be sent on school trips to France and Belgium and educated on the sacrifices of all the young lads that died
It's humbling..and something that stays with you..and rightly so.
But it seems these kind of things are shunned in our education system..like it's a taboo subject.
Shameful

My great grandfather (who I am named after) was killed on the 1st day of the battle. He is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial in northern France. I will be there with members of my family on Friday to celebrate his life and remember his and every other mans sacrifice for us to be able to lead the lives we do today!

Re: Battle of The Somme
Many Fine Irish Regiments and men who were loyal to the Crown..so you class all Irish as cowards is wrong on my part.
But vast majority of the slippery cunts are just that.
Blatantly sided with the Krauts in WW2..

And make no mistake..would have rejoiced in our defeat.

I despise the no good cunts
